Most Basketball players and fans “of a certain age” are familiar with the iconic Chuck Taylor All-Star basketball shoes – known as “Chucks”. But many don’t realize that Chuck Taylor went to Columbus High School (Class of 1919) before working with Converse to revolutionize the basketball shoe and popularize the game of basketball.
In 2013, Chuck Taylor was part of the inaugural class inducted into the Bull Dog Alumni Hall of Fame.
This year, on June 7, 2025 the Bartholomew County Historical Society is spearheading the celebration of Chuck Taylor Day in Columbus. The day’s events will include an unveiling of a new Chuck Taylor exhibit at the Historical Society plus food, live music, kids’ activities and basketball-themed fun. Rumor has it that a group photo of all attendees wearing their Chucks will be submitted to the Guiness Book of World Records to document the largest gathering of people wearing Chuck Taylor All-Stars.
