Duane L. Barrows
Duane was a Franklin College graduate, and received his Master’s degree from Butler University. He was a teacher, assistant football coach, and head boy’s swim coach at Columbus High School. He coached CHS swim teams to a record of 116 wins, 98 of which were consecutive dual meet victories and two losses.
His teams won six state championships, two runner-up finishes and one third place finish, along with five relay state championships and 28 individual state championships from 1956-65.
He was an associate professor at Indiana State University, where he coached he men’s swim team to a record of 87 wins and 57 losses (1966-79). He promoted and taught swimming for all ages while developing the Donner Swim Club in Columbus and then starting the Terre Haute Aquatic Club in 1971.
Duane was inducted as a member of the Indiana Swimming and Diving Hall of fame in 2007, and was a recipient of the Franklin College Alumni Athletic Award for Outstanding Athletic Achievement and Special Service award from the Indiana High School Swimming Coaches Association.
Beginning in 1984, a four-year scholarship was given in his memory to a graduating athlete from Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation.
